HVAC contractor insurance in Utah

HVAC Insurance Group provides HVAC contractor insurance in Utah: general liability, workers' comp, service-van auto, tools and installation floaters, and license bonds, quoted across 12+ A-rated carriers.

Utah rebuilt its HVAC license in 2026. The new H100 HVAC Contractor classification replaced the old S350, and every contractor applicant now files a general liability certificate with DOPL as holder, showing a $2 million total limit and $1 million or more for each incident. From Salt Lake City to St. George, we set up Utah HVAC coverage so those certificates never lapse.

What Utah's H100 HVAC license puts on file with DOPL

In Utah, the HVAC license itself carries a stated liability minimum. You file a GL certificate and a comp certificate, or a comp waiver, with the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) to get the license, and both have to stay current.

From S350 to H100

DOPL replaced the S350 HVAC specialty classification with a new H100 HVAC Contractor classification in 2026. The rule took effect March 30, 2026, and the new requirements apply to H100 applications submitted or postmarked on or after April 20, 2026. The rule also sets transition terms for existing S350 licensees. Confirm with DOPL how and when your S350 license converts, because we haven't verified the rule text on those dates.

DOPL licenses the business through a qualifier. To qualify for H100, that person:

  • passes the Utah Business and Law exam and the new H100 trade exam
  • shows two years of HVAC-specific experience (4,000 hours in the past five years) on W-2s, K-1s or tax returns
  • is a Certified Natural Gas Technician through the Rocky Mountain Gas Association or an equivalent

Plumbers have two shortcuts. An active Utah Master Plumber or Residential Master Plumber license, with the P200 or P201 plumbing classification, stands in for the gas technician certificate. An active Utah Journeyman, Master, Residential Journeyman or Residential Master Plumber license stands in for the HVAC experience records. Shops run by a plumber who added heating and cooling can lean on both.

We found no separate state journeyman card for HVAC techs. Applicants also complete a pre-licensure course from ABC, UHBA or AGC of Utah. DOPL's application lists H100 among its general classifications, which take the 25-hour course plus a 5-hour Business and Law course.

The insurance DOPL requires

  • General liability: a certificate, with DOPL as holder, that covers your scope of work at a minimum of $2,000,000 total and $1,000,000 for each incident. DOPL's contracting page lists these as updated minimums effective April 20, 2026. Some secondary websites quote a $3 million aggregate for H100; DOPL's own pages say $2 million.
  • Workers' comp: with employees on payroll, a comp certificate that lists DOPL; with none, a Coverage Waiver issued by the Labor Commission.
  • Bond: not a standard requirement, though DOPL's application notes a bond may be required before a license issues, under Utah Code 58-55-306.
  • Background check: fingerprinting becomes part of the application on January 1, 2027.

Utah adopts its construction codes statewide, and cities issue permits and inspect; we found no city HVAC contractor licenses. EPA Section 608 still applies to anyone who opens a refrigerant circuit. EPA 608 basics for HVAC owners Confirm the current requirement with DOPL's contracting division.

Utah workers' comp, waivers and the corporate catch

With a few exceptions, every Utah employer must provide comp for all its employees. The Utah Insurance Department sets base rates, which are then adjusted for occupation risk and claims history.

  • The waiver: sole proprietors with no employees, partners with no employees, LLC members and corporate officers can apply for a Workers' Compensation Coverage Waiver. The processing fee is $50 and isn't refunded.
  • The catch for HVAC corporations: the officer exclusion isn't open to a corporation that farms out its jobs, and Utah's Labor Commission puts construction outfits in that group. An HVAC corporation in that spot applies for the waiver instead.
  • Small corporations: a corporation with no employees other than up to five directors or officers, and that doesn't contract out work, may file to exclude itself.
  • Penalties: at least $1,000, injunctions that stop business, and loss of the "exclusive remedy," so an injured worker can sue you for damages.
  • 1099 techs: Utah's independent-contractor test wasn't part of our research, so check with your CPA or an attorney.

Coverages Utah HVAC contractors should line up first

General liability

DOPL requires $1 million / $2 million on file, so this is a license condition, not a choice. HVAC general liability

Workers' comp

Pollution liability

H100 is built around gas appliance work, and carbon monoxide claims turn on policy wording. HVAC pollution coverage

Utah risks that shape an HVAC premium

Gas work is written into the license

Utah wants the H100 qualifier certified as a natural gas technician or licensed as a master plumber. That says a lot about how much furnace, water heater and gas-line work Utah HVAC shops do. A separated flue or a bad gas connection is the kind of completed work underwriters review closely. How your GL treats a carbon monoxide claim depends on its pollution wording and on your state's courts, so ask us to walk you through it.

Insurance cancellation as a license violation

In most states a lapsed policy is a coverage gap. In Utah it's also a licensing event, because DOPL holds both certificates. If a GL policy cancels in the middle of a busy heating season, you can face a citation from DOPL and an uncovered claim from the same lapse. Pay-in-full or automatic-draft billing, and renewals worked well before the expiration date, keep that from happening.

A three-day repair clock in rentals

Under Utah's Fit Premises Act, landlords must maintain heating and keep any air-conditioning system working. These are habitability standards with a three-calendar-day correction period before renter remedies such as rent abatement or repair-and-deduct kick in. For a dangerous condition, remedial action has to start within 24 hours. Property managers will lean on you to meet those windows.

Utah HVAC markets we cover

Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City Building Services says installing or altering heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems requires a permit, alongside electrical and plumbing work. For shops bidding offices and mixed-use buildings downtown, every permit is a record of work your commercial HVAC coverage stands behind.

Ogden

Ogden requires a permit to replace a furnace or water heater, and to alter, change, extend, install, repair or replace any natural gas or mechanical system. That puts a permit behind most residential heating jobs in the city.

St. George

St. George's building department publishes an IRC Equipment and Duct Plan form and an IRC-IECC compliance certificate for residential permits, and keeps a list of blower door testers. Permits go through its CityInspect portal. When your duct plan sits in the permit file, a design complaint is a professional liability question.

What sets HVAC insurance cost in Utah

Utah sets the GL floor for you. Every contractor license needs a $2 million total limit, with $1 million or more per incident, on file with DOPL, so even a one-truck H100 shop can't buy lower limits.

The comp step at your first hire matters too. A solo owner on a waiver pays no comp premium, but the first W-2 tech means a policy and a new certificate naming DOPL before that tech starts. Tell us when you plan to hire so the timing lines up.

What you pay depends on your payroll by class code, your annual revenue, your mix of installation and service work, residential versus commercial jobs, the vans you run, your claims history and the limits you pick. H100 owners can compare published ranges in HVAC insurance cost.

Utah HVAC insurance questions

What is the new H100 HVAC license in Utah?
It's DOPL's HVAC Contractor classification, which replaced the S350 specialty in 2026. The qualifier passes the Business and Law and H100 trade exams, documents 4,000 hours of HVAC work in the past five years, and holds a natural gas technician certification or a Utah master plumber license.
How much liability insurance does a Utah HVAC contractor license require?
DOPL wants a GL certificate listing DOPL as holder, with limits of $2,000,000 total and $1,000,000 or more per incident. Confirm the current figure with DOPL, since some websites quote a higher aggregate.
Do I need workers' comp for a Utah HVAC license if I have no employees?
No, but you file a Labor Commission Workers' Compensation Coverage Waiver instead. Once you hire, you need a comp certificate naming DOPL. Corporations that sub out work, construction contractors included, file the waiver rather than the officer exclusion.
Do you insure HVAC contractors in Salt Lake City and across Utah?
Yes. HVAC shops and techs in Salt Lake City, Ogden, St. George and the towns in between are inside our Utah license. Our team answers each quote request within one business day.
